那个 (nà gè) combines the demonstrative 那 (that) with the general measure word 个. It is one of the most versatile demonstrative phrases, used before nouns for people, things, and abstract concepts: 那个人 (that person), 那个问题 (that question), 那个地方 (that place). In hesitant speech it functions as a filler (那个...那个...) similar to um or uh in English, which can sound inadvertently offensive in some contexts. Its near equivalent is 这个 (zhège, this one).
