Cet est la forme masculine singulière de l'adjectif démonstratif ce utilisée devant un nom masculin commençant par une voyelle ou un h muet, pour éviter le hiatus : cet arbre, cet hôtel, cet homme. Devant une consonne ou un h aspiré, on utilise ce : ce livre, ce héros.
La règle est purement phonétique : cet facilite la liaison ou évite le choc vocalique. Cette (féminin singulier) et ces (pluriel des deux genres) complètent le paradigme. Pour ajouter une valeur de proximité ou d'éloignement, on ajoute -ci ou -là au nom : cet arbre-ci, cet homme-là.
