The corridor on a high floor of a Singapore public-housing block. A long row of potted plants runs along the wall from one front door to the next, and fallen leaves lie on a rack of shoes outside the second door. An elderly Chinese grandmother stands by the first door with her arms folded, looking pleased with herself. A Malay woman in a headscarf stands by the second door holding up one shoe full of leaves. Between the two women stands a teenage boy, shrugging helplessly.
