A course, homework and live games, in one tool

Set a lesson on the AQA vocabulary list on Monday and see who did it by Friday. Every other tool in the department does one of these things; this one does all three.

Three ways to teach with it

Built around how tutors and teachers actually work, and all three work today.

Live tuition with a student

Share your screen and run any lesson, game or graded story together, with audio on every word. You see what they get wrong as it happens.

Works today

Homework and progress over time

Set a lesson, game, review, quiz or story as homework with a due date. Each student gets an email with a Start link; a grid shows who finished, who was late and how they scored, and every student's streak and the words they keep missing.

Works today

A whole class playing live

Put gender match or meaning match on the projector; the class joins on their phones with a PIN or QR code, everyone answers the same question against the clock, and a podium closes it out. The words they missed become homework in one tap. Or step through a lesson's words in present mode and ask the class as you go.

Works today

What you can use today

Nothing on this list is a promise. It is all live, on every plan.

  • Present mode

Step through a lesson's words on the board while pupils see the same card on their phones. Ask the class turns any card into a question.

  • Live games, joined by QR code

Gender match or meaning match on the projector. Pupils join with a six-digit PIN or by scanning the QR code, and a podium closes it out.

  • Missed words become homework

At the end of a live game, the words the class got wrong become a homework task in one tap, due in a week.

  • A homework grid that marks itself

Every pupil against every task: done in green, late in amber, missing in red. Download it as a CSV for the markbook.

  • Each pupil's weak words

The words each pupil keeps getting wrong, their streak and their week, and a button to set homework for that pupil alone.

  • A class leaderboard, with an off switch

This week's XP or active days, seen only by the class. Turn it off in the class settings if competition does not suit the group.

  • Classmate duels

Pupils challenge each other to KiloKombat vocabulary duels, named only by their class display names.

  • Co-teachers and email invites

Add a colleague to a class at no extra cost. Invite pupils by email, or share the class code or link.

  • Printable worksheets with answer keys

Every lesson prints: worksheets with the answers built in, for cover lessons and for pupils without a device.

  • Read-only, never deleted

If your plan lapses, the class goes read-only. Nothing is deleted, and pupils keep their own accounts and progress.

What your pupils get

Everyone in your class gets Kilo Lingo Plus across every language for as long as they are in it, and is free to explore beyond what you set.

  • AQA GCSE vocabulary courses for Spanish, French, Mandarin, German, Italian, Portuguese and Russian, Foundation then Higher.
  • Every course on the site: Spanish, French, Mandarin, English, Esperanto, Latin, German, Italian, Portuguese and Russian.
  • The most useful words first, with recorded audio, spaced repetition and games.
  • Graded stories written only with words they have already learned.
  • Mandarin answered in pinyin, so nobody needs a Chinese keyboard.
  • Their own account, which they keep if they leave the class.

Learning with a teacher or a tutor?

Send them this page. If they run your class on Kilo Lingo, every student in it gets Plus free while the class runs, you included.

Tutor for a living? Put it in your advert

Every student you sign up gets Kilo Lingo Plus for as long as they learn with you: the course, recorded audio and games between your sessions, at no cost to them. That is a line worth having on your profile.

Privacy and safety

Year 9 upwards

Kilo Lingo is for learners aged 13 and over. Joining a class asks for a month and year of birth, and younger pupils are turned away kindly.

No public profiles, no ads

Pupils in a class are taken off the public leaderboards and profiles, see no ads, and get no marketing pixels whatever the cookie choice.

No strangers, no chat

There is no chat or messaging anywhere. Nothing lets a pupil find, see or contact anyone outside their own classes.

Teachers see a defined set

Display name, activity, streak, XP, lessons, words and task results. Never a pupil's settings, other classes, or the email they signed up with unless you invited that address. Data is never sold.

Michael McGettrick

Who we are

We started with a notebook. Michael McGettrick, our director, studied Spanish and International Relations, spent an Erasmus year in Madrid and the year after as an English assistant in Le Havre. In Madrid the notebook went everywhere: every unknown word written down, then revised on the bus. It is the thing every GCSE language teacher recommends and almost nobody does. A few minutes a day, done every day, is the whole trick, and we built Classrooms as that habit with a teacher who can see whether it happened.

We are a small team: Michael has been a software engineer for the decade since, and native speakers check our Spanish, Mandarin and Portuguese. More about us. Write to hello@kilolingo.com and it reaches the people who build it.

Questions teachers ask

Can I use Classrooms today?

Yes. Start a free class: create a teacher account, name the class and share its code. It starts a 7-day free trial for up to 3 students, with no card. Choose the Tutor or Teacher plan when you are ready. Setting up a whole school or department? Use the form below and we will set it up with you.

What will it cost?

Tutor is $15 a month (or $150 a year) for up to 10 students; Teacher is $50 a month (or $500 a year, 2 months free) for up to 40. Both have every feature, unlimited classes and your own Plus. Those are launch prices: from 1 December, new Tutor subscriptions cost $23.99 a month or $239.99 a year and new Teacher subscriptions $79.99 a month or $799.99 a year. Subscribe before then and you keep your price for as long as you stay subscribed. For a whole department, email hello@kilolingo.com for a quote. Every plan starts with a 7-day free trial for up to 3 students, no card needed.

Do my students have to pay?

No. While they are in your class, students get Kilo Lingo Plus in every language. If they leave or you remove them, they keep their account and progress and become ordinary learners.

What age are the pupils?

Year 9 upwards: 13 and over. Under-13s cannot join yet, so Years 7 and 8 are not possible today. If you teach them, email us so we know you are waiting.

Do pupils need an email address?

Yes, one each, and most secondary pupils already have one: their school email through Google Workspace or Microsoft 365. They sign up with it and a password, or with Sign in with Google, and any other email works too. If your school filters outside email, ask IT to let mail from kilolingo.com through, because signing up with a password sends a code. Some schools also switch off Google sign-in for outside apps; the school email and a password still works.

What do pupils need to use it?

A browser. Phones, Chromebooks, laptops and the classroom PC all work, and there is nothing to install and no app store.

How long does it take to set up a class?

About a minute: name the class, pick the language and course, and share the class code or link (or invite pupils by email). For a live game, pupils join with a PIN or by scanning the QR code on the projector.

Which exam boards do you cover?

AQA only, for now: the AQA GCSE vocabulary list for Spanish, French, Mandarin, German, Italian, Portuguese and Russian, Foundation then Higher. Edexcel and Eduqas are not mapped yet, and there is no German GCSE course yet.

Where is the data stored, and what can I see?

On Amazon Web Services in the us-east-1 (Northern Virginia) region, in the United States, under the UK Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses; the privacy policy has the detail. You see each pupil's class display name, activity, streak, XP, lessons, words and homework results, and nothing else: not their settings, not their other classes, and not the email they signed up with unless you invited that address. Data is never sold. Need a data processing agreement? Email hello@kilolingo.com.

Can pupils talk to strangers?

No. There is no chat or messaging anywhere on Kilo Lingo. Pupils in a class come off the public leaderboard and profiles, and the only people they can find are their classmates, whom they can challenge to a vocabulary duel under class display names.

Setting up a school or department?

A tutor or a single teacher can start straight away with Start a free class. For several classes, an invoice or a data processing agreement, tell us about your pupils: we will set the classes up with you and reply by email, usually within two working days.
