Three de

Grammar for HSK 3.

The short version

Position picks the de, not meaning

的 (de) points forward at a noun, 得 (de) points back at a verb it hangs a complement off, and 地 (de) points forward at a verb whose manner it colours. Look at what sits on either side and the character is decided mechanically. Defaulting to 的 (de) everywhere is wrong two times in three.

他跑得快 tā pǎo de kuài

runs fast

地 (de) sets up the manner, 得 (de) reports on it

Both attach a word like 'happily' to an action, which is why they blur together. The difference is which side of the verb it lands on. 高兴地说 (gāo xìng de shuō) announces the manner before the speaking; 说得高兴 (shuō de gāo xìng) comments on how the speaking went. Same words, opposite order, different character.

高兴地说 gāo xìng de shuō

says happily

That's the gist. The full article goes deeper - more examples, the edge cases, the why - and the practice below scores like a vocabulary session and earns the same XP.
