怎 (zěn) does not stand alone in modern Mandarin. It is a bound morpheme that almost always appears with 么 (me) or 样 (yàng) to form the question words 怎么 (how, why), 怎样 (in what way), and 怎么样 (how about, what do you think). The character carries the question sense; the suffix carries the grammar.
