Relative pronouns
Prescribed by the Edexcel specification.
The short version
Que never drops out the way English's that does
English happily deletes that: the book I read. Portuguese never deletes que: o livro que eu li. If you can imagine a relative clause in English with no linking word at all, that is exactly the spot where Portuguese still needs que.
O livro que eu li era interessante.
Cujo agrees with the thing owned, not the owner
English whose gives no clue which noun to look at. Portuguese cujo takes its ending from the thing owned, the noun right after it, never from the owner: a mulher cujo carro (the woman whose car), o homem cuja casa (the man whose house).
O homem cujo carro foi roubado está triste.
That's the gist. The full article goes deeper - more examples, the edge cases, the why - and the practice below scores like a vocabulary session and earns the same XP.
