Ways to travel. che1 is the vehicle at the heart of most of them - train, car and bus are all built on it.

Worth knowing

A fire vehicle is a train, and a flying machine is a plane

车 (chē) is a wheeled vehicle. On its own it usually means a car, and it is the base of almost everything else.

汽车 (qì chē) is a car, a steam-vehicle, from the era when that was the novelty. 火车 (huǒ chē) is a train, a fire-vehicle. 开车 (kāi chē) is to drive.

飞机 (fēi jī) is an aeroplane: a flying machine. 机场 (jī chǎng) is an airport, a machine-field.

None of these has to be memorised as an arbitrary sound. They are descriptions, and once you have the components you can read a word you have never met. That is the compensation for the writing system, and it is a real one.

The two verbs for arriving

到 (dào) is to arrive, and it is short, common and slightly abrupt. 我到了 is I am here.

到达 (dào dá) is the formal version, the one on the departure board and in the announcement. Mandarin very often has a one-syllable everyday word and a two-syllable formal one, and the pattern is reliable enough to guess from.

离开 (lí kāi) is to leave, and it needs an object or a clear context: you leave somewhere.

走 is not always walk

走 (zǒu) is to walk, and it is also simply to go or to leave. 我走了 is I am off, said on leaving a room, with no walking implied.

For the specific sense of going on foot, Mandarin says 走路 (zǒu lù), walk-road.

站 stands still

站 (zhàn) is a station: a bus stop, a train station, a metro stop. It is also the verb to stand, which is where the noun came from - a place where things stand.

旅行 and 旅游

旅行 (lǚ xíng) is to travel, journey-go, and it covers travel of any purpose including business.

旅游 (lǚ yóu) is tourism specifically, journey-wander. If you are going somewhere for pleasure, this is the word, and using 旅行 instead is not wrong so much as neutral.
