Spanish · Chapter 4 · Lesson 7 · Grammar primer

Numbers advanced

On the AQA A-level grammar list.

The short version

Primero clips to primer, but only sometimes

Primero and tercero shorten to primer and tercer in front of a masculine singular noun, and nowhere else. So el primer día and el tercer piso, but la primera semana and la tercera calle keep the full form. With nothing following, the full form returns too: llegó primero.

el primer día

the first day

That's the gist. The full article goes deeper - more examples, the edge cases, the why - and the practice below scores like a vocabulary session and earns the same XP.
