What if...?
Imagining another world, with the imperfect subjunctive doing the heavy lifting.
Why these go together
Hypotheses need 'si' plus the imperfect subjunctive and a conditional, and regrets need the pluperfect subjunctive. These are the sentences for imagining how things could be, or could have been.
Si yo fuera presidente, cambiaría las leyes sobre la vivienda.
If I were president, I would change the housing laws.
Si tuviéramos más tiempo, podríamos resolver el problema.
If we had more time, we could solve the problem.
Si hubiera estudiado más, habría aprobado el examen.
If I had studied more, I would have passed the exam.
Supongamos que no existiera internet: ¿cómo viviríamos?
Let's suppose the internet didn't exist: how would we live?
Imaginemos que todos los jóvenes votaran.
Let's imagine that all young people voted.
En ese caso, el resultado sería muy distinto.
In that case, the result would be very different.
Es difícil predecir lo que pasará dentro de veinte años.
It's hard to predict what will happen in twenty years' time.
Si lo hubiera sabido, no habría dicho nada.
If I had known, I wouldn't have said anything.
Ojalá pudiéramos volver atrás en el tiempo.
If only we could go back in time.
