En la ciudad

Pueblo is a village or small town. Pueblo is also a people, in the sense of a nation or a population: el pueblo español. The same word for the settlement and for everyone in it.

English separates these completely and has to reach for folk or populace to get near the second sense. Spanish keeps them together, and the political weight the word carries in Spanish - it turns up in constitutions and protest chants alike - comes directly from that double meaning.

centro

El centro is the town centre, and it is where people say they are going far more often than English speakers say the city centre. Voy al centro is an ordinary Saturday sentence.

Spanish cities are usually built around a plaza with a church on it, and the geography of the vocabulary follows the geography of the place: esquina is a street corner, manzana is a city block, and manzana is also an apple. Nobody can tell you why.

Directions

Dirección is a direction and an address. ¿Cuál es tu dirección? is asking where you live, not which way you are facing.

Calle is a street. Camino is a path or a way, and also the road in the abstract sense: en camino is on the way. Puente is a bridge, and in Spain a puente is also a long weekend, when a public holiday falls near enough to the weekend to bridge across to it.

The buildings

Edificio is a building. Iglesia is a church, and in most Spanish and Latin American towns it is the landmark everything else is described relative to.

Biblioteca is a library, not a bookshop. The bookshop is librería, and this is the single most reliable false friend in the language: almost every English speaker gets it wrong once, usually while standing in one of them.

Banco is a bank and a bench. Both are places you sit down with money, if you are feeling generous about it.
