Ch 1 · Lesson 14

Katakana, through words you already know

The second kana, for words borrowed from other languages. Coffee, television, bread and hotel are all in it.

The short version

Katakana is mostly English in disguise

、、。

Koohii, terebi, hoteru: coffee, television, hotel.
Why?

Katakana writes borrowed words, and a great many of them come from English. Sound out and you get koohii, coffee. The long dash means hold the vowel. Once you see the pattern, a menu becomes half readable.

That's the gist. The full article goes deeper - more examples, the edge cases, the why - and the practice below scores like a vocabulary session and earns the same XP.
