Dative case

Prescribed by the Edexcel specification - revisited.

The short version

In Russian, the cold happens to you

Russian does not say I am cold. It says to me it is cold, with the person in the dative and no subject at all. The same frame covers fear, pain, boredom, needing something and even your age, so learning it once unlocks a whole family of everyday sentences.

Mne kholodno. Mne dvadtsat let.

I am cold. I am twenty.

You ring and help people in the dative

English gives ring and help a plain direct object, so learners reach for the accusative. Russian treats both as a kind of giving: you send a call to your mother and give help to your father. Learn zvonit and pomogat with the dative attached, as one unit.

Ya zvonyu mame. Ya pomogayu ottsu.

I am ringing Mum. I am helping my father.

That's the gist. The full article goes deeper - more examples, the edge cases, the why - and the practice below scores like a vocabulary session and earns the same XP.
