The First Day at Work

Story

Ben has a new job. It is his first day at work. He gets up early in the morning. He feels worried. "I want to do this well," he thinks.

Ben walks to the office. It is a big room with many desks. People sit and work. A woman comes to the door. "Good morning, Ben. I am your boss. My name is Mrs Reed," she says. She is kind.

Mrs Reed shows Ben the way things work. "This is your table. Here is your seat," she says. Ben sits down. He looks at the table. There is a phone and some paper on it.

A man comes to Ben. "I am Tom. I work here too," he says. Tom is nice. "I will show you the way we do things," he says. Ben is happy to meet him.

Tom shows Ben a list of names and numbers. "You put each name here. Then you call the people on the phone," Tom says. Ben tries. He picks up the phone. He talks to a woman. He writes her name down. It feels hard, but Ben learns well.

Then Ben does a thing wrong. He puts a box of paper on the floor. The paper falls out. Ben feels sad. "I am sorry," he says. "This is a bad start."

But Tom smiles. "It is all right, Ben. We all drop things on the first day," he says. Tom helps Ben pick up the paper. Ben is not so sad now. He is not so worried.

Ben works hard all day. He calls many people. He learns the way things work. At lunch, the team eats and talks. They are kind to Ben. "You do good work," Mrs Reed says.

At the end of the day, Ben walks home. He is tired, but he feels proud. His first day at work was good. "I can do this job," Ben thinks. Tomorrow he will come back again.
