The First Letter

Albert Hale could not read. He had carried this secret through most of his life the way other men carry an old injury: carefully, quietly, and without ever talking about it.

He had left school at twelve, when his father fell ill and the family needed money more than it needed letters. By the time anybody might have asked about his reading, he was a working man, and nobody asks a working man anything except whether the job is done.

A man who cannot read learns other things instead. Albert drove a delivery van around the county for thirty years and never once looked at a map: he carried every road in his head, by shape, the way you carry a song. In the pub he ordered what the next man ordered. In offices he said, I have left my glasses at home, would you read that out for me? Nobody in this world ever questions glasses.

His wife, Jean, read everything to him: the letters, the bills, the newspaper at breakfast. She had done it for as long as they had been married because, she said, she liked the sound of her own voice. He never asked her to do it. She never asked him why.

Their grandson, Sam, was seven, and stayed with them on Sunday afternoons. That winter Sam discovered reading the way some boys discover football, and he arrived every Sunday with a school book under his arm and one clear demand. Read to me, Grandpa.

So Albert did what he had always done with books. He held them open, looked at the pictures, and told a story. He was good at it, better, if we are honest, than most of the people who write books for boys of seven, and for a while that was enough.

Then Sam learned to follow the words with his finger. One Sunday, in the middle of a page, the finger stopped. "That is not what it says."

The room went very quiet. Albert looked at his grandson, and his grandson looked back at him, seven years old and completely without judgement, and something that Albert had held shut for fifty years quietly came open.

"No," he said. "It is not what it says. I cannot read, Sam. I never learned." It was the first time he had said it out loud in his life.

Sam thought about this the way he thought about everything, with his whole face. "My teacher says anybody can learn," he said. "She taught Ryan, and Ryan eats paper."

The lessons happened at the kitchen table on Sunday afternoons, with the door shut. Sam taught the way his teacher taught: sounds first, then short words, then long ones, with the patience of a small sergeant. When his grandfather got a word wrong, Sam said, try it again, in the flat voice of a man three times his age. When he got a whole page right, Sam drew a star on his hand.

By the new year Albert could read Sam's school books. By spring he was reading the newspaper in the shed, slowly, with his finger under the line, and the news, he found, was every bit as bad as Jean had always made it sound.

Jean was the difficulty. There was no good way, so late in a marriage, to tell her. In the end he did not tell her anything. One morning he picked up the newspaper before she could, and read the first page to her: slowly, carefully, out loud, his finger moving under the line. His hands were not quite steady.

Jean poured the tea. "Well," she said. "It took you long enough."

She had known since the second month of their marriage. You cannot live beside a man for a lifetime and not notice what he never does. All those years of reading to him, and liking the sound of her own voice: that had been for him, and she had never once let it look like help, because some help only works in the dark.

"Why did you never say?" he asked.

"Why did you never ask?" she said. And that was the whole conversation, and it was enough.

That summer Sam went abroad with his parents for two weeks, his first plane, his first time anywhere. And Albert, alone in the quiet house with Jean, did something he had never done in his life. He wrote a letter.

It took him three evenings, and he spelt weather wrong twice. It was not a long letter. The weather here is bad. The dog is well. I have read a whole book. It was about a horse. Your teacher was right, and so were you. Then he walked to the post office and bought a stamp, the first stamp he had ever bought in his life, and posted the letter to Sam's house, so that something would be waiting for the boy when he came home.

Sam read it standing in the hall, still brown from the sun, and wrote back the same day.

Albert read the answer at the door, on his own, twice. Then he went inside and put it behind the clock, where Jean kept the letters that mattered, and sat down with a new book. It was about another horse. He had fifty years of reading to catch up on, and a man has to start somewhere.
