The Suggestion Box

Eddie had worked at the warehouse for thirty years, and he knew every machine in it by sound alone. He could stand in the middle of the floor with his eyes shut and tell you which door was open, which truck was loading, and which of the three lifts was running empty. Nobody had taught him this. Thirty years teaches you, whether you ask it to or not.

Late that summer, the big crane over the yard started making a new noise: a small, dry click at the top of every lift. It was not loud. It was the kind of noise you only hear if you have listened to a machine every day for half your life.

Eddie did not like it.

By the door of the main office there was a suggestion box. Head office had put it there years before, under a sign that said YOUR IDEAS BUILD OUR FUTURE. In all his time at the company, Eddie had never once seen anybody open it. The story in the warehouse was that the key had been lost before the box went up.

He wrote his suggestion on a form anyway. The crane needs a new part before winter. The part is small. It costs less than a good dinner. He signed it, dated it and posted it into the box. Then, because he was not a fool, he went to see the new manager as well.

The new manager was called Price. He was young, he had come down from head office, and he used the words global, strategy and development constantly, sometimes all three in one sentence. The company had a new strategy that year. The strategy was to reduce costs, and the way to reduce costs was to eliminate everything the numbers said the company did not need.

"The crane," said Eddie. "It needs a new part before winter."

Price looked at his screen. "The numbers say the crane is fine," he said. "We do not repair machines that are fine. That is exactly the kind of cost this strategy is here to eliminate."

"Machines do not read numbers," said Eddie.

It was a brief meeting.

Winter came, and the click grew louder. Eddie warned Price twice more. The second time, Price showed him the results of an internal review. The review said the warehouse was doing better than ever, and that the new strategy was working. Eddie pointed out that the review had been written by the same people who had written the strategy. Price said that was not how he would put it.

On a grey Tuesday in the new year, the click changed. Eddie heard it from the far end of the floor, in the middle of his tea, and he was moving before the cup was down. He cleared every man away from the crane and stopped the loading. Then he stood on the line he had drawn and let nobody past, the way a dog stands at a gate.

Price came down from the office at speed. He talked about lost hours. He talked about costs. He talked about the strategy. He was still talking when the part inside the crane finally gave out, and the hook came down with the whole chain behind it and hit the empty floor like the end of the world.

Nobody said anything for a long time. The echo took a while to die.

Head office sent a team the next week. There was another internal review. The review praised the company's quick response, found that the strategy had in fact worked, and did not use Eddie's name once. There was one result. Eddie got an award for critical thinking, printed on thick paper, with his name spelled wrong. His salary stayed exactly where it was.

On his way out that Friday, Eddie stopped at the door of the main office and read the sign about ideas and the future one more time. Then he posted the award into the suggestion box, where, as far as anybody knows, it still is.
