The Whale on the Beach

The paper sent Grace to Saltby on a Thursday, to write four hundred words about the village festival. She was a journalist. She had asked for politics. She got a vegetable competition and a dance.

The storm arrived that night and took the festival with it. Grace lay in her small room above the shop and listened to the rain hit the window like stones. At midnight she wrote one line on her phone: nothing happens here.

In the morning the wind had gone, the way a guest leaves without saying goodbye. She walked down to photograph the damage, because a broken festival is still a picture, and she stopped at the top of the beach.

There was a whale on the sand.

It lay high up the beach, dark and still and far too big to be real, and then it breathed, one great wet breath that she felt through her boots, and Grace understood that the sea had gone out and left it behind.

The village arrived in ones and twos, and then all at once. The mayor came in his festival suit. Dean the farmer came with his dog and a face like bad weather. Somebody had made the right phone call, and the advice, passed from mouth to mouth along the beach, was simple: keep it wet, keep it calm, and wait for the sea to come back.

So that is what they did.

They carried blankets and towels down from the houses, wet them in the sea, and laid them across the whale's back. They carried water up the sand in cooking pots, in flower pots, in the cups from the village hall. When the sun came out, which felt cruel, they held the festival flags over the whale to keep the sun off it.

Grace put her phone in her pocket and carried water like everyone else.

Dean and the mayor had not spoken for ten years, because of a fence. They stood side by side all afternoon, passing wet towels along the line, and never said a word about the fence or anything else. The whale breathed every few minutes, a huge slow sound like a door opening, and the whole beach breathed with it.

By late afternoon Grace knew things she had never planned to know. She knew that a whale's skin dries faster than you would believe. She knew that the eye was the thing you could not look at for long, because it was watching, and it was patient, and it did not understand what had happened any better than they did.

The sea turned in the evening.

The water reached the tail first. The whale felt it and moved for the first time in hours, one long slow push against the sand, and a sound went along the beach that was half a laugh and half a cry. Nobody could lift a whale. Everybody knew that. The sea could, and it came up the beach without hurry, wave by wave, and took the weight away.

When the water was deep enough, the whale turned itself, heavy as a house, gentle as a hand closing. For a moment it floated in the low water as if it was thinking. Then the tail rose once, black against the grey evening, and it was gone.

Nobody cheered. It was better than that: a long breath out, all along the beach, and then people quietly picking up wet towels in the dark.

The festival happened anyway, that night, what was left of it. The band played in the hall with the doors open. The mayor gave the vegetable prizes away in one sentence each. Dean bought the mayor a drink, and neither of them explained it, and nobody asked.

Grace wrote until three in the morning and sent the paper two thousand words. They printed four hundred, next to an ad for garden furniture. She did not mind as much as she expected. Some stories do not fit the space you are given, and the best ones never fit at all.

She kept one photograph for herself: not the whale, but the line of people on the sand, passing water from hand to hand, waiting for the sea to remember them.
