Translation
Buddhism
Word origin
From Sanskrit buddha, awakened, the past participle of budh, to wake or to know. The Buddha is not a name but a title: the one who woke up. Esperanto adds -ism- for the doctrine, exactly as it does for kristanismo and kapitalismo.

Examples
.
Buddhism is one of the great religions of the world.
.
He is studying the history of Buddhism.
.
Monks of Buddhism live in that temple.
The root is a title, not a name. Sanskrit buddha means awakened, from
budh, to wake or to perceive. Siddhartha Gautama was given the title after his
awakening, and the religion is named from the title. Esperanto keeps the shape:
Budao is the Buddha, budaano a Buddhist person - with -an-, the
member-of-a-group suffix - and the doctrine, with -ism-.
The spelling is not settled, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest.
PIV, the standard dictionary, gives budao, budaano and , which is
the form this course uses because the frequency list follows PIV. A great deal
of published Esperanto, including most of the Esperanto Wikipedia, writes
budho, budhano and budhismo with the h, closer to the Sanskrit dh.
Both are in current use, both are understood everywhere, and neither is a
mistake. Say and read budhismo.
Compare the shapes. Kristanismo is built on
the adherent - plus -ism- - while is built on the
founder, Budao plus -ism-, and islamo is a plain
root with for the person. Three religions, three different
constructions. Nobody designed that; the words arrived at different dates from
different languages, and the countries and
peoples article works through the -an-
machine that half of it depends on.
Register and vocabulary. This is an encyclopedic word. Budaisma and
budaana are the adjectives, the first for the doctrine and the second for the
people. Around it: a templo is the building, a
monaĥo the monk, nirvano the goal,
mediti the practice, and
religio the category all of it sits in.
Esperanto kaj religioj covers the
wider ground, including the movement's own quiet debt to Asian Esperantists.
