on its own means to drive or urge along, and for- adds away, so is driving something off. Note the direction of the grammar: is transitive and you do it to somebody, while is intransitive and the runner does it themselves. Do not confuse it with , which is leaving a place or a person behind, or , which is removing a thing. The prefix for- is freely productive and gives , and , all with the same sense of movement away from here.
