Translation
homeland, home country
Word origin
Built inside Esperanto from hejmo, home, and lando, country. Hejmo comes from English home and its Germanic relatives, and lando from German Land, so the compound is Germanic on both sides even though the assembly is Esperanto's own.

Home-country. Decode it and you are done.Hejmo is a home, lando is a
country, and a is the country you call home. Both halves have been
in this course since the first three hundred words, at ranks 246 and 228, so
the word costs you
nothing but the moment of putting them together. English says homeland with
exactly the same two pieces in the same order, which makes this one of the
easiest compounds in the band.
The fence: , o, patrolando, naskiĝlando. Esperanto
has several words in this area and they are not interchangeable, so it is worth
laying them out.
| Word | Literally | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| home-country | the country you belong to and live by |
o | father-country | the fatherland, in the older register |
patrolando | father-country | the same thing, built the other way |
naskiĝlando | birth-country | strictly where you were born |
o is the traditional word and it is built with the country-forming
suffix -uj-, the one Zamenhof used for o and
o. Patrolando says the same thing as a plain compound and turns up
where a writer wants to avoid the suffix argument. Both carry the flag-and-
anthem weight that fatherland carries in English, and both belong to the
nineteenth century more than to this one.
is the cooler word. It says nothing about ancestry or blood and
everything about where your life is, which is why it is the one modern prose
reaches for and the one you should use. If you specifically mean the country
you were born in and nothing more, naskiĝlando is the precise choice, from
naskiĝi.
Register, and why this cluster matters here. The
landoj kaj popoloj article works
through the whole apparatus: the two country systems, the -- against -
fight, and the -an- suffix that gives you samlandano, a compatriot. This
page only adds the compound. But note where it sits: needs neither
system, because it is not a country name at all - it is an ordinary noun about
a relationship between a person and a place, and any country can be somebody's.
