Word origin
Built on komuna ('common', from Latin communis) with the -ist- suffix for an adherent of a doctrine. French communiste supplied the model, but the Esperanto word assembles from parts the learner already owns.

Examples
.
His father was a communist in his youth.
.
In that town the communists had a strong party.
.
The communists wanted an entirely new government.
This one decodes cleanly: komun- plus --, a person of the common. Once you see it, the whole political vocabulary falls out of the same two suffixes. -- gives the doctrine (), -- gives the believer (), and the adjective describes the party rather than the doctrine. The pattern is completely regular, so and o need no separate learning.
