plus --, and the suffix is doing something slightly odd here that is worth noticing. -- normally means one who does a thing, hung off a verb root - , o. On it hangs off a noun instead and means one whose trade is bound up with it. The same pattern gives o for a forester. Contrast -an-, which marks membership rather than trade: a o is anyone aboard, crew or not. o is a ship's crew as a body.
