Translation
material
Word origin
From Latin materialis, from materia, matter, and originally the timber of a tree. Materia itself is built on mater, mother, because the trunk was thought of as the mother-stuff that shoots grow from. The whole of materialo is one Esperanto root: the -al- in it is Latin material carried across, not an Esperanto suffix, because Esperanto has no -al- suffix to be found.

Resist the urge to slice this one up. is a single root borrowed whole, and although the -- sitting in the middle looks like an affix, Esperanto does not have one, so there is nothing to decode. Keep it apart from , which is matter in the physicist's sense, the stuff the universe is made of; is the practical stuff you build or work with, and by extension the raw material of a book or a lesson. The adjective materiala means made of matter, and materia leans philosophical.
