Word origin
From Latin metallum, from Greek metallon, which first meant a mine or quarry and only later the stuff dug out of it. The Greek verb behind it seems to have meant to search after, which is a fair description of mining.

Note the preposition for what a thing is made of: , out of. is a metal door, a gold ring, and the pattern holds for every material. The adjective metala is available and means made of metal or metallic in sound, so metala works exactly as it does in English. The trade is metalurgio, and o is a metal object, -- being the suffix for a concrete thing made from the root.
