Three pieces stacked in order: the root serv-, then -- for the person who does it as a trade, then -in- for female. Read Esperanto compounds left to right and they never surprise you. This word is a fair marker of where the classic corpus comes from, since it is everywhere in nineteenth-century translations and hardly anywhere in modern conversation, so treat it as reading vocabulary rather than something you will need to say. The -in- suffix itself has grown contentious among speakers who dislike marking women as derived from a default male; for occupations, plain now covers anyone.
