Keep well away from . A servant is paid and can leave; a slave is property. Esperanto does not blur that line the way polite English sometimes does. The metaphorical use works exactly as in English - , a slave to habit - and takes for the thing enslaving you. The root gives o for slavery as a condition, i to enslave, o for a female slave. Note that slavo, one letter shorter, means a Slav, and the two are unrelated.
