Translation
desk, writing table
Word origin
Another built-to-order compound: skribi ('to write') plus tablo ('table'), with the linking o between them. Skribi is Latin scribere and tablo is Latin tabula, so the parts are the same ones English used for scribe and table.
- Origin
- Esperanto compound (skribi + tablo)
- Root
- skribi + tablo
- English cognates
- scribe, table, describe
Examples
.
Many letters are lying on the desk.
.
He is sitting at the desk and writing.
.
My desk is made of old wood.
English borrowed desk from mediaeval Latin and lost sight of what it was; Esperanto just says what the thing is for. Note the word order inside the compound: the modifier comes first and the head noun last, so a is a table, while a hypothetical tabloskribo would be a piece of writing. That rule holds for every compound you will ever build.
