An international borrowing of tourist, from French tour, a turn or a circuit, and behind that Latin tornus, a lathe, from Greek tornos. A tour is literally a going round and coming back to where you started.

is an ordinary borrowed root, but the ending sets a trap that Esperanto learners are trained to fall into. -- is a real and busy suffix meaning the person who does a thing or holds a belief: teacher, doctor, an Esperanto speaker. So invites the reading - plus --, one who does .
There is even a root to make it plausible. is a tower. A on that reading would be a tower-keeper, which is a lovely word and not this one. The root here is - or - borrowed whole, and the giveaway is that the abstract noun is , not the -ismo you would get from a genuine -- word. Compare and o: the real suffix pair behaves differently.
For the people themselves, vojaĝanto (traveller, from vojaĝi) is the neutral word when you do not mean somebody on holiday, and is the stranger or foreigner without the camera.
