German · Chapter 3 · Lesson 9 · Phrase session

First, then, and but...

The little words that turn short sentences into a story.

Why these go together

Linking words are what make you sound fluent. Drill them inside whole sentences so the word order comes with them.

  • Zuerst mache ich meine Hausaufgaben, dann spiele ich Fußball.

First I do my homework, then I play football.

I like water, but I prefer coffee.

Before I go to school, I eat bread.

  • Nachdem ich gegessen habe, gehe ich spazieren.

After I've eaten, I go for a walk.

I'm staying at home because I'm ill.

  • Endlich ist es Freitag!

    It's Friday at last!

Then the bus comes and finally we're there.

When the weather is bad, I stay at home.

I like fruit, vegetables, cheese and so on.

  • Ich bin müde, denn ich habe wenig geschlafen.

    I'm tired because I didn't sleep much.
