"autem" is POSTPOSITIVE: it never begins its clause and almost always sits in second place, after the first word. Translate it into English and it usually moves to the front, so "ego autem" becomes "I, however". Failing to expect that is one of the standard beginner stumbles, because the clause appears to start with no connective at all.
Its force is mild. It marks a shift to a new point or a gentle contrast, closer to "now" or "moreover" than to a firm "but"; for a real objection Latin reaches for "sed" or "at". It also shares its slot with "enim" (for), "vero" (in fact) and "igitur" (therefore), which behave the same way.
