Canis, canis is third declension and common gender, masculine or feminine as the animal requires. It looks like a textbook i-stem and is not one: the genitive plural is canum, not canium, and the ablative singular is cane. Iuvenis and senex behave the same way, and the three are worth learning as a set of exceptions.

Romans kept dogs for hunting, herding and guarding, and "cave canem" is written in mosaic in a doorway at Pompeii. The affection is real but limited; in the Vulgate and the biblical corpus generally canis is an insult, the scavenger outside the gate rather than anything by the fire. English canine and kennel come from it, French chien and Italian cane directly.
