Cultus, cultus, m., fourth declension, and the perfect participle of colo pressed into service as a noun: the state of having been tended. Colo, colere, colui, cultum does three jobs - till a field, inhabit a place, honour a god - and cultus follows it into all three, so the same word covers agriculture, the manner of life you keep, and religious worship.
Ecclesiastical Latin narrows it hard onto the last of these, cultus divinus, which is why English cult arrived carrying only the religious sense while culture, from cultura, kept the farming one. The trap is that cultus is still a participle as well as a noun: cultus, culta, cultum meaning "cultivated, refined, polished", so a cultus vir is a man of taste, not an object of veneration.
