Etsi is et plus si, "and if", and it works like the si it contains: with the indicative when the concession is a fact, with the subjunctive when it is supposed. That is the practical difference from quamvis, which is always subjunctive and always hypothetical, and from quamquam, which is indicative and states something granted.
The main clause very often answers with tamen, "nevertheless", and Latin is happy to have both where English would use only one. Etsi also opens a sentence on its own as a corrective afterthought, "and yet", pulling back something just said. Its close relative tametsi behaves identically, and Italian benche and Spanish aunque took over the job in the daughter languages.
