Fructus, fructus is a fourth declension masculine, and as usual there the nominative singular, the genitive singular and the nominative plural are all fructus. It comes from fruor, "to enjoy", a deponent that takes the ablative, so the underlying idea is not the apple but the enjoyment of it - the yield, the return, the benefit.
That is why fructus covers crops, rent, revenue and profit as readily as it covers fruit, and why the lawyers' usufructus is the right to use a thing and take its produce without owning it. In the Vulgate the moral sense is standard: fructus spiritus, and the tree known by its fruit. Related words from the same root: fruges, frumentum, frugalis. English fruit, frugal, fructify.
