iustus

Iustus, iusta, iustum, first-and-second declension, straight off ius, "law, right". It carries two weights at once and English can rarely hold both: morally righteous, and legally regular. A iustum bellum is a war declared with the correct rites, not necessarily a good one; iustae nuptiae are a marriage the law recognises; iustum iter is a full day's march, the proper distance rather than a virtuous one.

The plural noun iusti, "the righteous", is a Christian favourite and dominates this corpus. Most printed editions spell the word justus with a j, a letter Latin did not have; consonantal i and j are the same sound and the same word, and the site uses i throughout for consistency.
