Longus, longa, longum, first and second declension, covering length in space and in time just as English does.

Two things to file away. Navis longa is a warship - long and narrow, built to be rowed - as against the navis oneraria, the round, fat merchantman; translating it as "long ship" misses that it is a technical term. And duration in Latin goes into the accusative, longum tempus, not the ablative, however much the ablative of time feels right. The adverb longe means "far" and is also the standard way to strengthen a superlative: longe optimus, "far the best". Comparative longior, abstract noun longitudo. English takes long, longitude, elongate, prolong, oblong and, through French, lunge and longeron.
