nosco

Nosco, noscere, novi, notum is third conjugation, and the tense system is the trap. The present means "get to know, come to know"; the perfect novi means "I have come to know", which in practice is simply "I know". So novit is a present in sense, and the pluperfect noveram means "I knew". A learner translating novit as "he knew" has lost the tense.

The perfect forms syncopate constantly: nosti for novisti, nostis, nosse for novisse, noram for noveram. Treat those as the normal spelling in verse and in the corpus, not as errors. Compounds are commoner still, above all cognosco and ignosco, "to pardon", literally "not to take note of". The participle notus gives English notable, notorious and notice.
