Nubes, nubis, f., third declension i-stem: genitive plural nubium, ablative singular nube. A poetic byform nubs turns up rarely and can be ignored.
The odd relative is nubo, "to marry", said of the woman rather than the man: the bride veiled herself for her husband, so she clouded herself, and nuptiae, "wedding", and English nuptial follow from the same veil. Figuratively a nubes is any dense mass - nubes peditum, a cloud of infantry - and in Christian writing it is the standard vehicle for a divine appearance. Keep it apart from nubilus, the adjective "cloudy", and from the neuter nubilum, "cloudy weather".
