Praeceptor, praeceptoris, m., is third declension, formed from praecipio, "instruct, lay down a rule". The feminine is praeceptrix. Beside magister, which is the general word for a schoolmaster or a master of anything, praeceptor leans towards the private tutor and the personal instructor - Seneca is Nero's praeceptor, not his magister.

In the medieval corpus you will almost always meet it spelled preceptor. The ae and e diphthongs collapsed in speech and scribes wrote what they heard, so praeceptor and preceptor are one word with two habits. Medieval Latin also gives it a rank: the Preceptor of a Templar or Hospitaller house is the officer in charge of a commandery, and the praeceptum he administers is a command rather than a lesson.
