Purus, pura, purum, first and second declension. It runs from the physical to the ritual without a seam: clean water, an unclouded sky, wine with nothing mixed in, and then a person who is undefiled and fit to approach an altar.
Two technical uses are worth knowing because they look wrong at first. Argentum purum is plain silver, meaning without relief decoration, not without alloy. And in law purus means unconditional, a bequest or a promise with no strings on it. The adverb is pure, the noun puritas, and purgo is the same root with -ago welded on.
