sapientia

Sapientia, sapientiae is first declension feminine, formed on the present participle of sapio, a verb whose literal meaning is "to taste, have a flavour" and whose figurative meaning is "to have sense". Wisdom in Latin is a matter of taste before it is a matter of learning, which is a better metaphor than the English one.

Keep it apart from scientia, which is knowledge of facts, and from doctrina, which is what has been taught you. Sapientia is judgement. Cicero uses it to translate Greek sophia, and the Vulgate makes it a technical term: the book of Wisdom is Liber Sapientiae, and Christ is called the Sapientia of God, so in this corpus a capitalised Sapientia is often a person and not a quality. Spanish sabiduria and French sagesse are its heirs.
