Senatus, senatus is fourth declension masculine, built on senex: literally the council of old men. The genitive singular is senatus, spelt exactly like the nominative, and the dative senatui. Early writers sometimes give a second declension genitive senati, which is a useful dating clue.
It is a collective, so the verb is singular: senatus decrevit. Senatus consultum, abbreviated SC, is a decree of the house, and senatus populusque Romanus gives the SPQR still stamped on Roman manhole covers. Worth knowing that the senate had no formal legislative power under the Republic: it advised, and for three centuries the advice was obeyed.
