Sententia, sententiae, f., first declension, from sentio: an opinion is what you have come to feel about something. The form is sentientia with the i squeezed out.

It spreads unusually wide, and English took two separate words from it. In the senate a sententia is a vote or a motion, and sententiam dicere is to state your view when called on. In court it is the verdict, which gives "sentence" in the judicial sense. In grammar it is a complete thought, which gives "sentence" in the other sense. In the schools it is a weighty saying, so Peter Lombard's Sententiae is a collection of authoritative opinions and was the standard theology textbook for four centuries. Note the tag mea sententia, "in my opinion" - ablative, no preposition.
