a plurali differt.
The singular number differs from the plural.
Singularis, singulare, third declension with two terminations: masculine and feminine share singularis, the neuter is singulare, and the ablative singular ends in -i. It is built on singuli, "one each".
Two senses run in parallel. The counting one gives the grammarians numerus singularis and gives the soldiers certamen singulare, single combat. The other slides from "one of a kind" to "extraordinary", and that is the sense Cicero reaches for in singulari virtute. English singular kept both, though the compliment has faded into something closer to "peculiar".
