Studium, studii, n., is second declension, the noun of studeo, "be keen on". The core is eagerness pointed at something, not schoolwork; that narrower sense only appears in the phrase studia litterarum, "literary pursuits", from which English took "study" and "student" and quietly dropped the enthusiasm.
The other half of the range is political: studium is partisanship, taking a side. That is what makes Tacitus's sine ira et studio, his promise to write "without anger or partiality", the line it is - he is not promising to avoid hard work. Watch for studiosus with the genitive, "keen on", and for the plural studia, which is nearer "interests" than "studies".
