Ultimus, ultima, ultimum is a superlative with no living positive behind it. The series runs from an obsolete ulter through ulterior to ultimus, and the preposition ultra belongs to the same root. In space it is the furthest, in time the last.

Two set phrases repay recognition. Ultima Thule, the furthest land known, is Virgil's, and it is where the modern sense of "the ultimate" begins. Ultimum supplicium is the death penalty, a formula that turns up constantly in legal and historical prose. Note also that Latin has no separate word for "latest" as against "last", so ultimus does both jobs and only context divides them.
