verus

Verus, vera, verum, first and second declension. The neuter has escaped its adjective and become two other things: verum as a noun is "the truth", and verum as a conjunction is "but", while the ablative vero is one of the commonest particles in Latin, meaning "indeed" or "but in fact" and often barely translatable.

Watch the near-neighbours in a text: verum "true" against verbum "word", and vero the particle against the dative or ablative of verus. The family is large and well used: veritas, vere, verax, verifico, verisimilis. English very came in meaning "true" and only later slid into a mere intensifier, which is why "the very man" still preserves the old sense; verify, veracity, verdict and aver are all here too.
