Drag from a word's first letter to its last, or tap the first letter and then the last. Words run across and down; Medium adds diagonals, and Hard hides some backwards too. On a keyboard, the arrow keys move round the grid and Enter marks the first and last letter. Early chapters hide toneless pinyin; switch the grid to Characters when you are ready, and each find shows both. In a character grid, a one-character word needs just one tap.
