Ch 11 · Lesson 2

Chule yiwai

Prescribed by the AQA specification.

The short version

(chúle) with (dōu) means 'except'

,。Chúle tā yǐwài, dàjiā dōu lái le.

Everyone came except him.
Why?

(chúle) X (yǐwài) does not say whether X is in or out: the second half decides. With (dōu), 'all of them', X is left out, because it was held up apart from the rest.

(chúle) with (hái) or (yě) means 'besides'

,。Chúle Zhōngwén yǐwài, tā hái huì shuō Yīngwén.

Besides Chinese, he speaks English too.
Why?

With (hái), on top of that, or (yě), too, in the second half, the thing after (chúle) stays in and something else joins it. Both words go after the subject and before the verb.

(chú cǐ zhīwài): on top of that

,。Chú cǐ zhīwài, wǒmen hái xūyào yìxiē qián.

On top of that, we also need some money.
Why?

(zhīwài) is the formal twin of (yǐwài). Put (cǐ), a written 'this', in the gap and you get a sentence opener that points back at what was just said. (hái) after it adds and (dōu) excludes, as usual.

That's the gist. The full article goes deeper - more examples, the edge cases, the why - and the practice below scores like a vocabulary session and earns the same XP.
