Ch 12 · Lesson 7

Yue lai yue

Prescribed by the AQA specification.

The short version

(yuè lái yuè) replaces (hěn)

。Tiān yuè lái yuè lěng le.

It's getting colder and colder.
Why?

(yuè lái yuè) + adjective means 'more and more', usually with (le) at the end for the change: (tiān yuè lái yuè lěng le). It already says how much, so it takes the place of (hěn): (yuè lái yuè hěn lěng) is wrong. It also goes before feelings and abilities: (yuè lái yuè xǐhuan).

(yuè) A (yuè) B (yuè … yuè …): the more, the more

,。Nǐ yuè shuō, tā yuè shēngqì.

The more you say, the angrier he gets.
Why?

Each (yuè) sits right before its own verb or adjective: (wǒ yuè xiǎng yuè shēngqì), the more I think about it, the angrier I get. One subject is said once at the front; two subjects each go before their own (yuè): (nǐ yuè shuō), (tā yuè shēngqì).

That's the gist. The full article goes deeper - more examples, the edge cases, the why - and the practice below scores like a vocabulary session and earns the same XP.
